Disturb us Lord

Disturb us, Lord, when

we are too well pleased with ourselves,

when our dreams have come true

because we have dreamed too little,

when we have arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when

with the abundance of things we possess

we have lost our thirst

for the waters of life;

Having fallen in love with life,

we have ceased to dream of eternity.

And in our efforts to build a new earth,

we have allowed our vision

of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,

to venture on wilder seas

where storms will show your mastery;

where losing sight of the land,

we shall find the stars.

We ask you to push back

the horizons of our hopes;

& to push into the future

in strength, courage, hope & love.

-Sir Frances Drake

I read this poem and I fell in love with it. The idea of asking the Lord to unsettle our ‘perfect’ life that we have so carefully set up for ourselves is such a foreign idea, but, completely necessary.

There are so many times when I say to myself, “I have a good life”, or “life is so great right now”, or something along those lines.

What I really need to be saying is, “Lord, you have blessed me beyond what I deserve. Here I am. Send me. Whatever you need, Lord, I am your willing servant.”

But more often than not, my greedy & selfish heart takes over, and is content with going through the motions.

I hope this little blog stirs in you a new kind of inspiring motivation that leads you to move and live for the Lord.

  • This is a really great post Sarah. Everyone who believes should really take this post to heart, and everyone who doesn’t believe should take the Gods word and what its telling us into consideration.

    Good luck, love you Sarah.
